  28. <meta content="This paper focuses on the question of whether it is worse to be poor in a poor area
  29. or in an area which is more socially mixed; in short, does living in a deprived area compound the
  30. disadvantage experienced by its residents, and do area effects contribute to social exclusion? The
  31. idea of social areas having direct or mediated effects on the lives of their residents continues to
  32. interest and challenge academic and policy debates on the effect of concentrated poverty and on
  33. the creation of more mixed and, thereby, more sustainable neighbourhood forms. However, area
  34. effects remain contentious and British research evidence is scant. Following a review of the
  35. theoretical and empirical understandings of the relationship between households and neighbourhoods,
  36. the paper presents survey data from a comparative study of deprived and socially mixed
  37. neighbourhoods in Glasgow and Edinburgh. These data provide evidence that supports the area
  38. effects thesis, in particular in relation to area reputation and employment. The paper concludes

  340. or in an area which is more socially mixed; in short, does living in a deprived area compound the&#13;
  341. disadvantage experienced by its residents, and do area effects contribute to social exclusion? The&#13;
  342. idea of social areas having direct or mediated effects on the lives of their residents continues to&#13;
  343. interest and challenge academic and policy debates on the effect of concentrated poverty and on&#13;
  344. the creation of more mixed and, thereby, more sustainable neighbourhood forms. However, area&#13;
  345. effects remain contentious and British research evidence is scant. Following a review of the&#13;
  346. theoretical and empirical understandings of the relationship between households and neighbourhoods,&#13;
  347. the paper presents survey data from a comparative study of deprived and socially mixed&#13;
  348. neighbourhoods in Glasgow and Edinburgh. These data provide evidence that supports the area&#13;
  349. effects thesis, in particular in relation to area reputation and employment. The paper concludes&#13;
  350. that, with certain caveats, living in areas of geographically concentrated poverty creates additional&#13;
  351. problems for residents.</p></div><table style="margin-bottom: 1em" cellpadding="3" class="not_ep_block" border="0"><tr><th valign="top" class="ep_row">Item Type:</th><td valign="top" class="ep_row">Article</td></tr><tr><th valign="top" class="ep_row">Keywords:</th><td valign="top" class="ep_row">Area effects, neighborhoods, urban policy</td></tr><tr><th valign="top" class="ep_row">Subjects:</th><td valign="top" class="ep_row"><a href="http://eprints.utas.edu.au/view/subjects/370104.html">370000 Studies in Human Society &gt; 370100 Sociology &gt; 370104 Urban Sociology and Community Studies</a><br /><a href="http://eprints.utas.edu.au/view/subjects/370401.html">370000 Studies in Human Society &gt; 370400 Human Geography &gt; 370401 Urban and Regional Studies</a></td></tr><tr><th valign="top" class="ep_row">ID Code:</th><td valign="top" class="ep_row">2282</td></tr><tr><th valign="top" class="ep_row">Deposited By:</th><td valign="top" class="ep_row"><span class="ep_name_citation"><span class="person_name">Dr Rowland G Atkinson</span></span></td></tr><tr><th valign="top" class="ep_row">Deposited On:</th><td valign="top" class="ep_row">22 Oct 2007 16:14</td></tr><tr><th valign="top" class="ep_row">Last Modified:</th><td valign="top" class="ep_row">09 Jan 2008 02:30</td></tr><tr><th valign="top" class="ep_row">ePrint Statistics:</th><td valign="top" class="ep_row"><a target="ePrintStats" href="/es/index.php?action=show_detail_eprint;id=2282;">View statistics for this ePrint</a></td></tr></table><p align="right">Repository Staff Only: <a href="http://eprints.utas.edu.au/cgi/users/home?screen=EPrint::View&amp;eprintid=2282">item control page</a></p>
